Disney 2011 Blu-ray 3Ds: Lion King, Beauty

Marking the biggest and most aggressive commitment by any studio to the Blu-ray 3D format, The Walt Disney Studios announced this morning that the company will release at least 15 of the studio’s films on Blu-ray 3D this year.

As we first reported here last August, two of the releases will be converted Disney animated classics that have yet to be released theatrically in 3D, “The Lion King” and “Beauty and the Beast.”

“Beauty and the Beast” was delayed from its planned theatrical release last year and was to be released this year on the movie’s 20th anniversary. “Lion King” was also to be released theatrically in 2011, though no plans have been announced and Disney reps say there are no theatrical release plans to be announced for either film at this time.

A special Diamond Blu-ray edition of “Beauty and the Beast” was just released three months ago on Oct. 1.

Also coming to Blu-ray 3D from Disney in 2011 will be the recent holiday 3D theatrical hits, “Tron: Legacy” and “Tangled.”

Each release will include thematically linked 3D menus, 3D previews of coming-attractions trailers, and the animated introduction to Disney Blu-ray 3D featuring Timon and Pumbaa that has been included on the studio’s current Blu-ray 3D releases.

“As our contemporary library of 3D content continues to grow, and the original artists and filmmakers meticulously ‘dimensionalize’ their work for release on the Blu-ray 3D format, we will be offering movie-lovers the most incredible in-home entertainment experience they will ever have,” said Lori MacPherson, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.

Also coming to retail will be “Bolt,” which has been bundled with Sony electronics products, as well as the studio’s earliest pioneering 3D releases, “Chicken Little,” Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas,” and “Meet the Robinsons,” as well as another release from 2010, “G-Force.”

Disney has already put three Blu-ray 3D titles in the market late last year, beginning with “Disney’s A Christmas Carol,” followed by “Alice in Wonderland” and “Step Up 3D.”

The new slate will give the studio 20 Blu-ray 3D titles in the market.

  1. That’s great!! Can’t wait to see it in 3D.. Aside from the technical advancement, both stories do spread the true meaning of love and essence of existence both in nature and in life. 3D’s today are evolving but still pirate strategies are still on its way of giving out more problems in both movies and music industry.

  2. I never by anything pirated.Quality is crappy and never has the features the real movie has.I know this because I bought a dvd fromebay and found out it was a pirated dvd.I was n ot happy, told ebay and tried to find right channels in disney to let them know of this trash.I am hoping that the 3-d effect is really great in the remakes of these movies.Of course, from Disney,I would expect nothing less.Thank You Disney for pushing 3-d ahead so I can get my movies quicker.
