Pirates 3D strikes IMAX record open

IMAX scored its biggest global opening ever with the 3D “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.”

And 3D audiences in any format showed they preferred the first 3D “Pirates,” with 94% rating the movie “highly favorable” vs. 81% for 2D, according to opening-weekend exit polls.

IMAX showings accounted for $16.5 million on 394 screens, and a swashbuckling $60,100 per screen internationally, where the film collected $8.3 million on 138 IMAX screens, according to Disney and IMAX.

The movie raked in the fourth biggest global opening of all time with $346.4 mil. in overall grosses worldwide, with nearly half of those grosses — 46% — coming from 3D showings, according to producer/distributor Disney. “Pirates 4″ racked up $90.1 million in domestic box-office grosses in 4,155 U.S. theaters — 2,747 of them (66%) with a 3D premium ticket price that accounted for 37% of grosses in the U.S. IMAX showings accounted for $8.2 million of that haul, for a per-screen average of $32,000.

Both the film and the 3D performed even better overseas with a record $256.3 mil. in international grosses overall, according to Paul Dergarabedian of Hollywood.com Box Office.  About 66% of that came from 3D showings.

All of this booty will be added to the $2.7 billion of the first three films in the “Pirates” franchise.

“These results demonstrate the rising global appeal of top Hollywood blockbusters presented in IMAX’s format, and perfectly highlight the potential inherent in IMAX’s international growth strategy,” said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. IMAX’s “Pirates” generated a per-screen average of more than $100,000 on 15 international IMAX screens, eight of which are in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Others are in China, Korea, Taiwan, Australia, Europe and Japan. The highest-grossing screen worldwide is the IMAX Kinosfera in Moscow, with a gross to date of more than $240,000. Newly opened IMAX theatres in Milan, Italy ($51,650) and Mallorca, Spain ($48,000) have also posted strong results.

Meanwhile, “Thor,” also in 3D — 60% of opening weekend grosses were from 3D, grossed another $15.5 million in its third weekend in the U.S., hammering its domestic total to $145.4 million.

And 3D animated “Rio” flew away with another $4.65 mil. to raise its cume to $131.6 mil.

IMAX Fast Five grosses #5 overall

Universal’s “Fast Five” was so strong in its opening weekend that the $8.3 million in IMAX grosses alone would have ranked the film fifth biggest of any movie. (Cast teaser for IMAX Fast Five below.)
Overall, “Fast Five” grossed a whopping $83.6 mil. on the final weekend in April, the biggest opening this year, the biggest opening of any movie since “Harry Potter 7″ last November, and the biggest opening in the franchise’s history, according to Hollywood.com Box Office.
IMAX opened the movie on 245 screens domestically for one week only before “Thor” is presented in IMAX 3D Friday (May 6) at IMAX digital locations.

Meanwhile, the 3D “Rio” was a distant second but was in its third weekend and collected another $14.4 mil. to cross the $100 million mark at $103.6 mil. Another 3D animated movie, “Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil,” ranked sixth in its debut with $4.1 mil.

Sucker sets 2D IMAX record

The IMAX presentation of “Sucker Punch” last weekend set a record percentage of the overall sales for a 2D movie.

IMAX Corporationtoday announced that its release of Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Sucker Punch,” grossed $4 million on 229 domestic IMAX screens, or 21% of the movie’s overall $19 million take, which is the biggest percentage ever for an IMAX 2D movie, according to Hollywood.com Box Office.

“Zack Snyder’s visual thrill ride is perfectly suited for the IMAX Experience, and we are particularly pleased with the large market share, which is a record for a 2D title,” said Greg Foster, Chairman and President, Filmed Entertainment.

Internationally, IMAX estimated cumulative gross box office of approximately $315,000 on 23 IMAX screens in markets like Holland and Brazil, among others. The movie is expected to open on approximately 80 additional international screens in coming months.

IMAX pushes Number Four to #2

IMAX presentations of DreamWorks’ “I Am Number Four” accounted for a very strong 13% of the film’s $19.5 mil. in opening weekend box office grosses, pushing the movie distributed by Disney to a strong second place finish, not far behind Warner Bros.’ thriller “Unknown.”

IMAX was responsible for 13% of the “Number Four” take, according to Hollywood Box Office. That’s not surprising because the IMAX presentation greatly enhances the movie that has a lot in common with the stories of “Superman”/”Superman II” from the late 1970s and early 1980s, and “Transformers.” It’s big and noisy with giant alien creatures and humanoids wielding really big weapons who tear up roads, schools and football stadiums in their quest to track down and kill nine of their own species who mysteriously wound up on Earth as teens where each is discovering they have unique super powers. All of which is delightfully magnified on the much bigger IMAX screens and through the IMAX sound system that rattles your seats.
The movie also has a bit of the old WB network feel (and now “Twilight”) with the movie mostly populated by attractive teens and mostly taking place at nighttime.
If not much is particular original, it’s all good fun and holds your interest, maybe even enough to see at least the first follow-up in what producer Michael Bay apparently hopes to be a franchise series.

Meanwhile, two 3D movies remained in the top six in their second weekend but “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” dropped from a close second all the way to sixth place with $13.6 mil. this weekend, while Elton John’s “animated “Gnomeo & Juliet” brought in another $19.4 mil. for Disney to keep it in third place with only a 23% drop, bringing its total to $50.4 mil., just slightly behind Bieber’s cume of  $51.7 mil.

“Sanctum” surfaces 2nd with $9.2 mil.

Universal’s “Sanctum,” whose executive producer (James Cameron) is the only recognizable name on or off screen, dove into the dark cave of Super Bowl weekend and managed to survive with a decent $9.2 million in box office gross.
The action adventure that benefited from IMAX and 3D premiums, swam to second place despite appealing to the football demographic, and well ahead of the counter-programmed romantic comedy “No Strings Attached,” which had $8.4 million in its second week of release.

Another 3D flick was among the top five, Sony’s “The Green Hornet,” which stung another $6.1 mil. from moviegoers to move closer to $90 mil. after a month in release.
