ESPN’s Burns at 3D Ent. Summit

ESPN VP of strategic business planning and development Bryan Burns will outline the sports network’s commitment to 3D at the third annual 3D Entertainment Summit Sept. 16.

Burns will speak on “Turning The Corner From SD to HD to 3D,” one of four panels in the DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group’s conference programming block called Home 3D: Solutions and Strategies.

“I’m looking forward to examining the events of the last decade that have led ESPN to its industry leading position in 3DTV,” Burns said, “as well as considering the challenges and alliances that need to be formed between those who have business interests in 3DTV to further ‘turn the corner’ and drive future consumer interest in this new opportunity.”

The two-day conference produced by The Bob Dowling Group and Unicomm on Sept. 15/16 at the Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City, Ca., is presented in association with Variety.

“With ESPN leading the charge, televised sports is proving to be a powerful driver for consumer adoption of 3D,” said Dowling,” and we are delighted that Bryan Burns, the network’s go-to executive on all things 3D, will address our conference on one of the industry’s hottest sectors.”

In addition to ESPN 3D, Burns currently leads ESPN’s domestic high-definition services, ESPN HD, ESPN2 HD, ESPNU HD and ESPNEWS HD, and has been an integral part of creation of the HD services from business planning prior to the announcement of ESPN HD in 2002.

3rd 3D Film Festival 9/30-10/3

The third annual 3D Film Festival (3DFF) is shifting its new permanent home to The Los Angeles Film School (LAFS) at 1641 N. Ivar Ave. in the redesigned Sunset and Vine district of Hollywood.

The four days of events from Sept. 30 – Oct. 3, spread out over five city blocks, will include screenings and red carpet premieres at the LAFS’s new RealD 3D-enabled screening room with Sony Electronics providing its 4K digital cinema projector.

Presented by LAFS and RealD, the exclusive 3D technology provider for the festival screenings, and produced by 3D live event pioneer The Dream Factory, 3DFF has the support of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and City Council Member Eric Garcetti’s Office.
“The 3D Film Festival celebrates the latest in film technology, ensuring Los Angeles remains on the cutting edge, and by working with the LA Film School, this festival will help to keep the film industry where it belongs — in Hollywood — for years to come,” Garcetti said in a statement.

The new W Hollywood Hotel is the official hotel of 3DFF.

The LAFS theater will also function as a classroom for 3DFF’s 3D Academy educational programs offering intensive training classes for 3D stereoscopic filmmakers and technicians. Beginning in 2011, LAFS will offer a 3D course of study for its students. The highlight of the 3D Academy program will be the “72 Hour 3DFF Short Film Festival” in which LAFS students will be given 72 hours to create a 3D short film that will be presented during the 3DFF Closing Night Event and Award Show.

“Hosting the 3DFF is the perfect opportunity to embrace this exciting technology of tomorrow,” said Diane Cerycz-Kessler, Co-Chairman of the LAFS.

3DFF will announce its full line up of nightly screenings this August to include the 3ology Short Film Program and a nightly 3D Horror Film Showcase at Midnight.

National 3D Demo Days Sept. 10-12

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and ESPN have teamed up to create National 3D Demo Days, a weekend of 3DTV programming events and demonstrations in retail locations.

ESPN 3D will provide continual 3D programming nationwide from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET Sept. 10-12.

A recent study conducted by CEA found 64% of sales associates said shoppers are expressing a desire to experience sports in 3D.

Among the highlights on the schedule:

* At 3:40 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, a live telecast of defending Big Ten Conference champion No. 3 Ohio State hosting No. 19 Miami of the ACC in the first meeting between the perennial powers since the Buckeyes defeated the Hurricanes 31-24 in the 2003 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl to win the 2002 BCS National Championship. This marks the second time that Ohio State has been featured in 3D by ESPN as the team’s game against USC on September 9, 2009, served as a test telecast for the network.

Other programming will include coverage from the 2010 FIFA World Cup, X Games 16, college football’s Boise State vs. Virginia Tech game from Sept. 6, as well as entertaining footage from the Harlem Globetrotters in an appearance at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla.

“Bringing ESPN 3D to retailers across the country is a great step forward for the rollout of 3D,” said Bryan Burns, vice president, ESPN business strategy and development and member of the CEA Board of Industry Leaders.

Eight in ten sales associates report the level of interest in 3D technologies has increased in recent months. Participating retailers across the country will hold 3D demos at their locations to give their customers an experience they cannot get anywhere else.

“With a complete 3D system in place – from products to content and distribution – 2010 is the year for this exciting new technology to take off,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CEA.
