IMAX Corp. has licensed two of the company’s large format 3D documentaries to Samsung Electronics America for exclusive distribution on 3D Blu-ray with the purchase of a Samsung 3DTV and 3D Blu-ray player.
The announcement comes as Samsung also announced an extension of its deal with DreamWorks Animation to release “How to Train a Dragon” and all four Shrek movies exclusively this fall with the Samsung 3D starter kit that includes 2 pairs of 3D glasses.
The IMAX deal is a limited use license of “Into the Deep” and “Galapagos” exclusively for the next 12 months with the starter kit that will be available starting this fall.
The IMAX brand will be featured on packaging of Samsung products and displayed as part of the promotion of the products in retail stores around the world. Earlier this year IMAX announced a partnership with Sony and Discovery Networks to create a new 3D TV channel to launch next year.
“Samsung is developing excellent television products that offer a powerful 3D experience for consumers in their living and family rooms,” said Richard Gelfond, CEO of IMAX.
“3D has raised the bar for immersive entertainment, and we believe adoption of 3D will increase as people have more appealing content choices,” said John Revie, senior vice president of Home Entertainment, Samsung Electronics America, Inc. “…Samsung is proud to… collaborate with IMAX to deliver richer content to the home.”

I think that this move of exclusivity of certain movies to certain tv brands is slowing down 3d. its painfull enough that 3d movies are being released very slowly but ontop of that they are only packed with a tv and not sold separatly. what in the world are we supposed to buy? what will we watch? the same movie over and over again?
