DreamWorks/Samsung: 5 more 3D Blu-rays

DreamWorks Animation SKG is once again teaming up with Samsung Electronics America to release a new 3D Blu-ray version of “How to Train Your Dragon” this fall bundled exclusively with Samsung’s home 3DTV starter kit that will include a 3DTV, 3D Blu-ray player and two pairs of 3D glasses.

“Dragon” grossed $480 million globally in theaters last spring. The companies teamed on a similar bundling promotion earlier this year with the industry’s first 3D Blu-ray release, “Monsters vs. Aliens,” and the 3D Blu-ray version of that movie is still only available with the purchase of a Samsung 3DTV, not at general retail outlets for owners of other brands of 3DTVs.

DreamWorks and Samsung will also be offering all four of its Shrek movies in 3D Blu-ray later this fall, including the first three that have been converted from 2D for their first-ever presentation in 3D. All of these titles will also be available exclusively with the purchase of a Samsung 3DTV.

Samsung also announced a similar deal Wednesday with IMAX for two of that company’s large format 3D documentaries, “Into the Deep” and “Galapagos.”

“We are pleased once again to extend our ongoing alliance with Samsung… so that DreamWorks Animation fans will soon be able to enjoy a premium version of ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ in 3D Blu-ray,” said John Batter, Co-President of Production at DreamWorks Animation.

“We believe that 3D TV adoption at home will increase as more global 3D hits, such as ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ are made available to the consumer for 3D home viewing,” said John Revie, senior vice president of Home Entertainment, Samsung Electronics America, Inc.

DreamWorks’ next 3D animated movie “Megamind” will be released in theaters Nov. 5.
