It was a bright world this weekend for Disney’s release of Marvel’s pounding superhero IMAX 3D movie “Thor: The Dark World,” which grossed more than $307 milion the weekend of November 8-10, $86 mil in the U.S., and another $241 mil.-plus overseas, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.
3D theaters enjoyed 39% of that haul, of which IMAX theaters also benefited with $5.2 mil. of the total take, but IMAX had to share its limited screen time with previous commitments to the second weekend of “Ender’s Game,” which dropped more than 62% in total gross in all venues to $10.25 million this weekend. Other large-format screen venues took advantage by claiming another seven percent of the total gross.
Meanwhile, 3D movies accounted for four of the top 10 movies this weekend, with third-ranked “Free Birds” collecting $11.18 mil. in the U.S.; “Gravity” with another $8.4 mil. to climb to $231 mil. in the U.S., and “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” with $2.8 mil. to hit $110 mil. to date.
