Although Oscar typically snubbed the most popular movies of the year, most in 3D and/or IMAX, even with 10 nominees for best picture of the year, one 3D movie, “The Life of Pi,” did get recognized (11 nominations overall), and all five animated movie nominees were in 3D — “Brave,” “Wreck-it Ralph,” “ParaNorman,” “Frankenweenie,”and “The Pirates! Band of Misfits.”
Several 3D and IMAX releases were recognized with multiple awards in tech categories.
“Skyfall,” and IMAX release, was recognized with a handful of nominations for best song (Adele’s theme), music, as well as cinematography, sound editing and sound mixing.
IMAX and 3D release “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” collected several Oscar tech noms for make-up and hairstyling, production design, and visual effects.
The James Bond franchise will enjoy a 50th anniversary tribute during the Academy Awards telecast on Feb. 24.
