3net to launch first 3D motion comic

Early next year 3net will introduce the first 3D motion comic, an adaptation of the popular “Marksmen” comics. Production is being completed by Culver City-based Jump Creative on four half-hour episodes to be shown back-to-back, according to 3net President Tom Cosgrove.

A 3D trailer drew applause and the most visible reaction from industry audiences this week in Beijing, Shanghai, and particularly Tokyo and Seoul, including top executives from TV networks and production studios.

The series, based on writer David Baxter and artist Javier Aranda’s “Marksmen” year-old comic books produced by Image Comics and Benaroya Publishing about the protector of San Diego in the future that is a walled utopia in a post-21st century wasteland nation of warring fiefdoms, will be made available for sale globally following the first quarter premiere on 3net.

The network owned by Sony, Discovery and IMAX announced last month the creation of 3net Studios to produce and distribute 3D TV programming as a way to supplement advertising revenue and help seed the network and the market in general with a greater volume of 3D programming.

Cosgrove told 3DHollywood.net that he hopes these episodes draw enough interest to warrant producing additional episodes. The plan is to find more innovative programming like this that will draw broad audiences to 3D in general and 3net specifically.

Cosgrove is also co-chairman of the International 3D Society which held the presentations in Asia at which 3D programmers and producers shared their experiences and challenges with each other. Cosgrove said meetings like that are vital to growth of the industry.
