Vanessa Hudgens in 3D “Journey 2”

Vanessa Hudgens of “High School Musical” will be part of the cast of the 3D sequel “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,” which has started shooting in Oahu.

The family adventure sequel to the original “Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D” that was the first narrative film to use Fusion System 3D camera rig developed by James Cameron and Vince Pace and was named Best Overall 3D Experience of 2008 by this website 3DHollywood.net, features the return of Josh Hutcherson as young adventurer Sean Anderson, with Dwayne Johnson starring as Sean’s stepfather, Michael Caine as Sean’s grandfather, and Kristin Davis as Sean’s mom.

Brad Peyton (“Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore”) will direct the movie in which Hudgens and Luis Guzman play a father-daughter tour guide team.

The film New Line Cinema presentation of a Walden Media and Contrafilm production to be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures is being produced by Beau Flynn & Tripp Vinson, and Charlotte Huggins from a screenplay by Mark Gunn & Brian Gunn, story by Richard Outten.

Beginning in January, production will move to Wilmington, North Carolina, to finish shooting after the holiday hiatus, and is scheduled to wrap principal photography in February.

The new journey begins when Sean receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island with strange life forms, mountains of gold, and deadly volcanoes. Unable to stop him from going, Sean’s new stepfather joins the quest. Together with a helicopter pilot and his beautiful, strong-willed daughter, they set out to find the island, rescue its lone inhabitant and escape before seismic shockwaves force the island under the sea and bury its treasures forever.

The creative filmmaking team includes director of photography David Tattersall (“Gulliver’s Travels”), production designer Bill Boes (“Fantastic Four”), costume designer Denise Wingate (“Wedding Crashers”) and Academy Award© nominated visual effects supervisor Boyd Shermis (“Poseidon”).

    Would you care to revise the statement : “the original ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D’ that was the first live-action movie ever filmed in 3D ” ?

    That is totally inaccurate.

    In fact, JOURNEY wasn’t even the first Digital 3D live action movie. That was Jeff Broadstreet’s loose 3D remake of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD.

    Come on, you should know better.

    Ever hear of BWANA DEVIL, HOUSE OF WAX, KISS ME KATE, IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE, CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, JAWS 3D, METALSTORM, AMITYVILLE 3D, DIAL M FOR MURDER, INFERNO, THE BUBBLE, etc, etc, etc?

    And don’t next say that those moves were shown in red/cyan anaglyph, either — because they weren’t.
