Saw 3D #1 despite poor 3D

Saw 3D #1 despite poor 3D

Another week and another 3D movie tops the weekend boxoffice charts. This time it was Lionsgate’s “Saw 3D,” the seventh and supposedly final episode in the series, with an estimated $24.2 million. That’s $10 million more than “Saw VI” and represents nearly the entire run of “Saw VI,” despite some pretty justifiably poor reviews of the newest installment in terms of content and 3D effects.

Meanwhile, another 3D movie, “Jackass 3D,” picked up another $8.4 million on a slow weekend to top the $100 million mark.

Both movies enjoyed a staggering 90-plus percentage of their grosses from 3D showings, with “Saw 3D” at a whopping 92% due to 2,100 of its 2,808 overall locations being 3D venues, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

That’s two of the last three weekends with a 3D movie atop the rankings, and the next two weeks are likely to bring two more with DreamWorks Animation’s “Megamind” opening this Friday, Nov. 5, followed by Disney’s “Tangled” Nov. 12.

Critics complained about the poor quality story in this one but I have never been the target audience for this long-running and succcessful franchise so I won’t comment on that.

But I will comment on yet another disappointing 3D experience, which was highlighted by the 3D Lionsgate logo at the beginning and went quickly downhill from there. This may be the first, or at least worst example of blurriness I’ve seen yet, right from the start when the camera was panning or moving in any direction.

It was extra disappointing because the trailers have made it appear as if it would be well-done 3D, not unlike the most “Final Destination” last year. But even the gratuitous and obvious gore and splatter shots were unimpressive.

  1. I thought the 3D added a sense of closeness and connection with the characters. I could almost feel their pain during the 3d torture sceens. I have a high tolerance to gore but this movie in 3d i found myself squinting and trying to look away ,as when i was a kid, with the 3d gore sceens. I’ve seen all of the Saw movies and this by far was the best due to connection with the 3d aspect. This movie is definitely not for the week stomach person as i found my stomach turning. When leaving the theater i saw someone’s remains of popcorn that had came back up. Nice. My opinion 7/10 that was hurt by the week storyline.

  2. I was lucky enough to have seen this movie yesterday, and I went in with high expectations thinking that Kevin Greutert was behind the camera again. But I was sadly disappointed. Saw 3D was a jumbled mess. Only towards the end did it really pay off. And even then, there were STILL things I didn’t like. Such as: Dr. Gordon. Why oh why was he in on it the entire time? That is almost bad enough to nearly ruin parts of the first one for me. I mean really? The writers couldn’t have come up with an ending that will satisfy all Saw fans, and not just the Gordonites? Seriously! He saws his foot off in desperation to save his family, he cauterizes his wound, he is taken in by John, who heals his wound, then Gordon just decides to side with him? WHAT?! And the worst part is, they don’t even shed some light on that. All they do, is show John take him in, heal his wound, then show him doing all of the things a doctor would need to do for the traps, such as the key behind Michael’s eye in Saw II, the stitches put on Trevor and Art in Saw IV, and I think that’s it. I HATED that. And there was a scene where Dr. Gordon goes up to John and shows Lynn Denlon from Saw III and states that “she’ll be perfect.” UGH. And if you haven’t guessed by now, the package that Jill drops off at the hospital was for Dr. Gordon. The ending was great. It’s something that we’ve ALL expected and wanted for a very long time. It shouldn’t disappoint anyone. Other problems I had with Saw 3D: the acting, the effects, the characters, the unanswered questions, the fact that Cary Elwes and Tobin Bell were BARELY IN THE MOVIE, and the no montage at the end. I could go on, but I seriously would come off as a hater, which I’m not. I loved this movie because I love all Saws. But this is easily the worst. I am extremely disappointed. This was just a big slap to the face for all hardcore Saw fans. And I don’t blame Kevin Greutert. I blame the writers and the producers for this. Saw 3D was a mess, but I’m sure Saw VII would have been a good movie.

  3. I love 3D horror movies they make the gore so intense. I went to Saw 3D opening night and was so freaked out when I went home! I got a chance to see that Scar 3D on demand the other day too and couldn’t believe how much scarier it was to watch 3D horror at home. I really hope they release Saw 3D on demand too, it’s such an untapped resource for 3D movies, luckily its starting though with Scar 3D and a few others that are coming soon.
