The Hubble space telescope once needed a set of glasses to clear its blurry image. Now mass audiences will get a chance to put on glasses of their own to get a look at the Hubble spacecraft and its extraordinary mission and images.
IMAX is tripling the number of theaters showing the 43-minute “Hubble 3D” documentary from the 55 mostly giant-screen theaters it has been playing in since March 19 to more mainstream (and smaller) auditoriums as of this Friday, Aug. 20. Most will be in 3D, but some will even be shown in 2D, and some will get the film a little later.
The movie, narrated by Leonardo, which in most cases replaces the DiCaprio starring “Inception,” will play for a special limited time engagement. The following Friday, Aug. 27, a special edition of “Avatar,” with additional footage, returns for a limited engagement through Sept. 9 in about 175 IMAX theaters, exclusively in 3D. “Hubble 3D” will continue playing matinees at many of those theaters adding “Avatar: Special Edition.”

Thus far “Hubble 3D” has generated gushing reviews, including here at 3DHollywood.net (with interview of director/producer Toni Myers and astronaut Mike Massimino), and grossed more than $14 million from its domestic and 15 international locations.
