3D World Cup in theaters too

If you live outside the United States and haven’t bought a 3D TV yet, you’ll still be able to watch FIFA World Cup soccer matches in stereoscopic 3D at a local movie theater later this month.

Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp. has partnered with Sensio to bring the first ever globally broadcasted live 3D sporting event to theaters outside the U.S.

The companies will use Sensio’s 3D format technology and Cinedigm’s CineLive theatre technology design to bring at least 26 games, including eight games starting with the World Cup quarterfinals, to hundreds of theatres in at least 20 countries around the world.

Cinedigm’s live 3D technology leveraging Sensio’s 3D format was recently used for an Earth Day live 3D feed of James Cameron speaking from Los Angeles to the Business for the Environment Summit at the Global Initiatives Conference in Seoul, South Korea, on April 22.

The company also used its 3D and digital cinema  expertise in the U.S. for the first ever commercially available live 3D sporting event, the 2009 BCS Championship Game, followed by the 2009 NBA All-Star Saturday Night, and most recently the 2010 NCAA Men’s Final Four and Championship Games to digitally equipped theatres in its CineLive Network.

“Cinedigm’s experience in sophisticated digital broadcasting technologies has enabled the company to design a satellite network and broadcast techniques capable of providing live 3D sporting events to theatres so clear and realistic most audiences forget they are watching events on the big screen and feel like they are actually at the events,” said B. Scott Cassell, V.P. Operations and Technology of Cinedigm’s Digital Media Services.
