“Avatar” has generated nearly $400 million on sales of nearly 20 million copies of the movie on DVD and Blu-ray Disc globally and has become the top-selling movie on disc of all time overseas, according to 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.
Even though the home version is not in 3D, consumers have spent more than $382 million purchasing 19.7 million copies worldwide in just the first three weeks of release, easily surpassing the 16.7 mil. units of “The Dark Knight” in the same period.
The previous biggest-selling DVD title overseas since the launch of DVD in the mid-1990s was “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.”
Blu-ray sales alone of 6.2 mil. units are more than double any previous release. “Dark Knight” previously held the title of top Blu-ray seller, but with less than 3 million units, which “Avatar” surpassed in its first week of release.
