Among the many records “Avatar” has shattered on the way to crossing $350 million in North America and $1 billion worldwide in only three weekends, IMAX chairman and president Greg Foster told us today that the movie has become the top IMAX film of all-time with $66.4 mil. globally.
He says at this rate it could become the first Hollywood feature to reach $100 million on its initial run at IMAX theaters. (Other long-running IMAX documentaries such as “Space Station” that recently crossed the $100 million mark after a seven-year run.)
Early estimates have “Avatar” grossing $68.3 million at all North American theaters combined over New Years weekend, down only 10% from Christmas weekend and still off less than 12% from its opening weekend.
