‘Carol’ & ‘It’ still singing at B.O.

The Disney-Zemeckis 3D motion-capture version of “A Christmas Carol,” playing in 3D and IMAX theaters, dropped only 26% in its second weekend to $22.3 million ($63.3 mil. in 10 days), a lesser decline and a bigger gross to date than “The Polar Express.”

“Polar,” also from Zemeckis, is widely considered not only a success and the movie responsible for the latest resurgence in 3D movies, but also a perennial moneymaker in IMAX theaters and on Blu-ray/DVD.

What’s more, 74% of the film’s first weekend gross came from 3D showings on 2,045 screens, which included $4.2 million at 181 IMAX theaters, according to boxofficemojo.com.

Meanwhile, “This is It,” which surpassed $200 million globally last week and is also playing in many IMAX theaters, brought in another $5.1 million at U.S. theaters in its first extended weekend after the planned two-week limit.
