One of the new allures of the newest Royal Caribbean ship Allure of the Seas will be the biggest 3D movie theater on the high seas.
Launching in December and sharing the title with sister Oasis of the Seas as the world’s largest cruise ships from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, the Allure will dual-purpose equip its 1,320-seat Amber Theater showcasing the Broadway stage play “Chicago: The Musical” with a specially-equipped 3-D screen.
A spokesman for Royal Caribbean told 3DHollywood.net today that the company has yet to choose a 3D system vendor or book the first movie to play there, but the movies will be first-run and family-friendly, meaning that vacationers may be in store for Disney’s “Tangled” (opens domestically Nov. 12), “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” (Nov. 19), Disney’s “Tron: Legacy,” or “Yogi Bear,” the latter two debuting on Dec. 17.
Three other Royal Caribbean ships, also departing from Port Everglades on seven-night Caribbean cruises — Freedom of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas will be retrofitted with 3D movie screens as early as January.
The Disney Wonder was the first cruise ship to offer Disney Digital 3D movies with the Dolby system beginning in November 2008 with the debut of Disney’s animated “Bolt” as it was also premiering in theaters nationwide. The Wonder and sister ship Disney Magic each offer 3D movies in two theaters, including the 977-seat Walt Disney Theatre and the 268-seat Buena Vista Theatre, as well as shows featuring 3D films combined with in-theatre visual effects that create what Disney calls an immersive 4D experience that was created with the debut of “Captain EO” at Disneyland in the 1980s.
Royal Caribbean’s Allure, which spans 16 decks, encompasses 225,282 gross registered tons, carries 5,400 guests at double occupancy, and features 2,700 staterooms, will also feature the first Guess flagship store at sea in the ship’s Royal Promenade neighborhood. There are seven distinct themed areas, which will include Central Park, Boardwalk, the Royal Promenade, the Pool and Sports Zone, Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center, Entertainment Place and Youth Zone.

A very interesting story, Scott. Now we hope if you are invited by Royal Caribbean on one of the their cruises that you report to us what your thoughts are regarding their 3D movies. It would be interesting to hear if they are significantly better than regular movies. Please keep us informed.
Does the motion of the cruising ship result in a 4D movie?
