It takes a lot to dwarf the second biggest opening U.S. weekend ever of $175 million for “Iron Man 3” through May 5, but the Disney release of the Marvel 3D movie has done that with a $505 mil in overseas grosses over the last 10 days., for a combined global total of $680 mil.
More than a quarter of that came from overseas grosses a week earlier when the movie featuring converted 3D by Stereo D grossed $198 mil. from April 24-28. To date more than 74% has come from foreign theaters.
In China, the movie includes an additional few minutes of footage tailored to that market, all of which was also converted to 3D by StereoD.
In the U.S., theaters might as well have played “Iron Man 3” on every screen because no other movie did much business at all, the next closest being “Pain and Gain” at only $7.6 mi.
Universal Studio’s “Oblivion,” playing on IMAX screens for a third weekend, collected another $6 mil. for a cumulative total at domestic theaters of $76 mil. and a global total of $223 mil.
Meanwhile, two other 3D movies joined “Iron Man 3” in the top 10, Fox’s “The Croods,” with another $4.2 mil. to raise its third-best total of the year in the U.S. to $169 mil., and a whopping $518 mil. worldwide, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. Disney’s second 3D movie in current release, “Oz: The Great and Powerful,” jumped from 13th to 8th, leapfrogging over “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.” The $1.8 mil. for “Oz” pushed its $229 mil. year-leading domestic total to $229 mil., and global total to $485, now second behind “Iron Man 3.”
Two other 3D movies stayed among the top 13 movies in release: 11th-ranked Paramount’s “G.I. Joe” added $1.3 mil. to total of the year that now stands at $119 mil. domestically and $356 globally. The converted “Jurassic Park” pulled in another $2.3 mil. in its fifth weekend to stand at $44 mil. to date in North America alone and $8 mil. overseas.
