“Top Gun 3D” soared in its IMAX opening weekend with a per-screen average of $6,333, second best average of all the movies of Feb. 8-10, 2013, and higher than last year’s re-release of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” in IMAX theaters.
Paramount’s release of “Top Gun 3D” grossed $1.9 mil from 300 locations compared to $1.67 mil. at 267 locations and an average of $6,269 for “Raiders,” according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.
The top movie of the weekend, “Identity Thief,” had a per-screen average of $11.600 in 3,100 theaters, but no other film reached an average of even $4,000 except “Top Gun 3D.” The film is set for release on Blu-ray 3D Feb. 19.
Meanwhile, another 3D release, “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters,” remained in the top five with an estimated $5.75 mil. for a total to date of $43.8 mil.
