Lionsgate’s 3D horror sequel “Texas Chainsaw 3D” surprised prognosticators and topped the boxoffice this first post-holiday weekend of 2013 with $23 million.
That surpassed the $20.1 mil. of “Django Unchained,” while another 3D and IMAX movie, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” dropped more than expected — 45% — to $17.5 mil., to climb t0 $263.8 million.
Meanwhile, “Skyfall,” which opened more than two months ago in IMAX theaters, took in another $3,2 mil. this weekend to rank 13th and move to $297 mil. in the U.S. and to $1.023 billion worldwide, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. That moves the 007 movie past “The Dark Knight” into 13th place all-time, and not far behind “Alice in Wonderland” and “Stars Wars – Episode 1: The Phantom Menace.”
