The arrival of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” in movie theaters ($687 million worldwide through Dec. 20) adds yet another of many pools of revenue that continues to be amassed based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories. The latest video from OnlineMBA.com breaks down the economic impact of this fantasy epic that includes everything from the original Hobbit story that would last for generations and the three-volume Lord of the Rings novel that followed with more than 150 million copies sold, the movies (almost $2 billion worldwide for the first  three Peter Jackson films), toys, and the explosion in tourism in New Zealand.
