“The Dark Knight Rises” has become the second film after “Avatar” to surpass the $100 million mark globally in IMAX theaters alone, according to an announcement by IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures.
The third and final installment in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, which incorporates more than an hour of footage shot specifically for the giant screen IMAX format, has played in 557 IMAX theatres worldwide after its seventh week of release. The film reached a total of $65.1 million from 332 IMAX screens domestically and $37.3 million from 225 IMAX screens internationally, including China, which began playing the film on Aug. 27 in 75 IMAX theatres.
Nolan was the first filmmaker to use IMAX cameras in a major motion picture with the opening Joker sequence of the 2008 sequel blockbuster “The Dark Knight” filmed with IMAX cameras.
