World’s first 3D TV drama series in Japan

Several Japanese companies, including Sony and two TV broadcasters, announced Wednesday (Jan. 12) that they are launching the country’s, and perhaps the world’s first 3D TV drama series.

Actress Ayako Kawahara stars in 3D Japanese TV drama "Tokyo Control"

The 10-episode “Tokyo Control,” about workers in an air traffic control center, is set to star well-known Japanese actress Ayako Kawahara. It premieres Jan. 19 and will be shown bi-weekly on a new 3D channel of Fuji Television Network‘s SkyPerfecTV Hi-Def service, which reaches 391,000 subscribers, though it’s unclear how many of those homes have 3DTVs. It will also be shown in 2D.

Sony provided 3D technical support and the production crew reportedly came to California to seek advice from the “Avatar” filmmakers.

Fuji, Japan’s largest TV broadcaster, is also initiating a regular Sunday night slot for 3D sports, music, and documentary programs starting this month.
