“Tron: Legacy” has created an IMAX legacy with $51.4 mil. in global revenue from IMAX theaters worldwide, it was announced today by Imax Corp. and The Walt Disney Company.
That’s represents more than 15% of the film’s total boxoffice of $328.8 mil. so far and IMAX is still rolling the movie out to open in additional theaters in other overseas territories in the coming weeks, including Germany, Austria and France. Its recent opening in China at 24 IMAX locations generated $1.2 mil in the opening week, with a per-screen average of more than $49,000.
Domestically, the the Imax 3D version of “Tron” has racked up $34.7 million since a month ago on Dec. 17. Internationally, the film has generated $16.7 million.
“These phenomenal Imax results clearly indicate that we are achieving our goal of offering…a completely unique and differentiated cinematic experience,” said Chuck Viane, president of global distribution for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
“Audiences love to experience well-made, visually stunning and great sounding high-tech films in IMAX, and “Tron: Legacy” clearly delivers on all counts,” said Richard L. Gelfond, CEO, IMAX Corp.
