A whopping 91% of the multiple record-setting $50.4 million openingĀ of “Jackass 3D” came from 3D showings of the movie in 2,448 3D locations (repping 79.5% of 3,081 total locations), according to preliminary estimates by Paul Dergarabedian of Hollywood.com Box Office.
Just when overly anxious pundits were starting to poo-poo on 3D as a format, along comes “Jackass 3D” to give the technology and naysayers a swift kick in the butt with a debut that shocked the industry and has already sparked talk of stringing together all the leftover bits of pranks, mayhem, and gross-out humor into a second theatrical release early next year.
In addition to the biggest October opening weekend ever, it was also the second biggest opening for an R-rated comedy on any weekend (behind only the $56.9 mil. of “Sex and the City: The Movie,” 9th best R-rated movie opening overall) and 3D is clearly the reason it doubled the opening day performance of “Jackass: Number Two” with $22 million last Friday.
The first “Jackass” grossed $64.3 million in 2002 and the second one collected $72.8 million in 2006.
Two other 3D movies still in theaters last weekend also ranked among the top ten: the family CGI animal adventure-fantasy “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls Of Ga’Hoole” took in another $4.2 million for a total-to-date of $46 million, and the Wes Craven horror film “My Soul to Take” scared up another $3.1 million in its second weekend for total of $11.9 million.

Man I want to slap Gizmodo’s Adam Frucci in the face with this one. He wrote and article “Is 3D Already Dying” that stated the steady decrease % of revenew that came from 3D screens after Avitar, even though the following movies were mostly busts and 3d conversions. Man that felt good. Thanks 3dHollywood. 3D rocks!
I love 3D in movies! I will definitely need to see this. All of the 3D in horror movies has been really impressive lately. I saw Saw and My Bloody Valentine recently as well as that Scar 3D on demand. I really hope all 3D movies become available on demand eventually. It was so intense watching Scar at home at night, really creeped me out.
