The 43-minute IMAX documentary Hubble 3D, which debuted in many theaters last weekend, has now grossed $13.5 million in domestic theaters, which is $3.5 mil. more than the $10 mil. of “Piranha 3D” on its opening weekend.
The catch is that “Hubble 3D” has been playing in about 50 IMAX giant screen theaters since March, where it racked up most of those grosses.
Tripling the number of IMAX theaters to 149 domestically, including many in malls and more commercial locations, generated another $348,000 in only three days from Aug. 20-22, according to IMAX.
Once “Avatar: Special Edition” opens for a limited two-week run in IMAX 3D theaters this weekend, “Hubble 3D” will play mostly matinee show times.
