3D or not 3D? That is Cloudy Destination

3D or not 3D? That is Cloudy Destination

Two big 3D movies from 2009 come to Blu-ray on the same day, just two weeks before the Consumer Electronics Show sets off a surge of home 3D announcements for Blu-ray and TVs.

But only one of the two new movies on Blu-ray this week comes in 3D.

  • FinalDestinationBluBoxThe Final Destination in 3-D” (Warner, $35.99) provided the best 3D experience in theaters since “Journey to the Center of the Earth” and best of four movies in this series since the first one, all designed as chill rides and no more than excuse to stage fun shocking deaths.

– One of best and perhaps last of the old-style 3D movies on Blu-ray.

– 2 alternate endings in which different main characters are killed.

– making-of death scenes

– Home 3D version with old cardboard blu/red anaglyph glasses not bad at all; a little dark but pretty good 3D impact.

  • CloudyMeatballsBoxCloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” (Sony, $39.95). No 3D here until official, new and improved Blu-ray 3D format this summer. Good-hearted, zany, family-friendly computer-animated comedy about a young man trying to please his father with his wacky inventions that really go awry.

– Looks just fine in 2D – bright and colorful

– “Splat mode!” fun for a few seconds clicking to have food items on the screen.

– Miranda Cosgrove music video

– fun, fairly impressive vidgame-like “food fight” game

– deleted scenes

– interactive sing-along
