Avatar 2 & 3 in 2014, 2015

The Harry Potter franchise may be ending in 2012 but 20th Century Fox announced Wednesday that “Avatar” is just getting started, with two sequels planned for release in 2014 and perhaps 2015.

The studio says creator James Cameron will begin work on the scripts early next year with production beginning as early as late next year featuring the same cast.

That would put “Avatar 2” on track for a release in late 2014 — four years after the original. The third one may or may not be shot concurrently with the second one, as has been done with the final two Harry Potter movies. If it is, which is likely, that would mean “Avatar 3” could be released as early as December 2015.

Cameron and produce Jon Landau are also working on a 3D conversion of “Titanic” for release in 2012, and the same studio is planning the first of all six Star Wars movies converted in 3D to be released in 2012.
