For the first time in a long time there are no 3D movies among the ten top-grossing movies of the weekend. No IMAX movies either, with “Sucker Punch” opening weaker than expected and dropping quickly.
But IMAX did have a solid opening of its new Warner Bros. 3D nature documentary, “Born to be Wild,” with a gross of $850,000 and a per-screen average of $4,126, according to Hollywood.com Box Office.
Last year at this time there were two strong-performing 3D movies in “Clash of the Titans” and “How to Train Your Dragon.”
This past weekend kids animated movie “Hop” and the remake of “Arthur” topped the charts in yet another overall down weekend.
There are five new 3D movies slated for release in the next few weeks, beginning with “Rio” next week, followed by four high-profile titles land in theaters in May: “Thor,” “Priest,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” and “Kung Fun Panda Kaboom.”
