So much for seeing Justin Bieber in IMAX 3D.
Universal Pictures’ 3D action-thriller “Sanctum,” from executive producer James Cameron, will get a special two-week run at IMAX 3D digital theaters beginning Feb. 4, it was announced today.
That’s just one week before Bieber’s “Never Say Never” is opening on Feb. 11. IMAX announced last week that it is releasing the DreamWorks live-action sci-fi thriller “I Am Number Four” on Feb. 18 but would not confirm at that time that the large format franchise was out of the running for at least a one-week play for the Bieber 3D movie.
With “Sanctum” on Feb. 4, IMAX will be limited to a three-week window in most of its theaters for “The Green Hornet,” another 3D movie that opens Jan. 14.
“This special two-week run provides IMAX theatres with more films in the first quarter than ever before,” said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond.
“Sanctum,” which follows a team of underwater cave divers on a treacherous expedition when a tropical storm forces them deep into the caverns where they must fight raging water and deadly terrain, was shot by director Alister Grierson on location off the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia.
“This film, coupled with the IMAX 3D format, will provide audiences with jaw-dropping access to otherwise inaccessible regions of the world and put you right in the middle of the action,” said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment.
“We’re thrilled that it is joining Fast Five in next year’s IMAX offerings from Universal,” said Universal Pictures Chairman Adam Fogelson.
