Disney announced seven upcoming 3D and/or IMAX releases for 2011 today from Walt Disney Studios, Pixar Animation, Touchstone, and DreamWorks Pictures today (the July 15 “Winnie the Pooh” and Nov. 23 “The Muppets” will not be in 3D or IMAX):
Feb. 11: “Gnomeo & Juliet” (3D) CGI animated story of garden gnomes (voice of James McAvoy and Emily Blunt) caught up in a feud between neighbors; featuring Elton John hit songs.
Feb. 18: “I Am Number Four” (IMAX) about an extraordinary Ohio teen (Alex Pettyfer) with powerful abilities who is hiding out while being hunted by ruthless enemies who have already killed the first three of his kind.
March 11: “Mars Needs Moms” (Disney Digital 3D and IMAX 3D): The final CGI/motion-capture film from Robert Zemeckis’s Image Movers Digital follows nine-year-old Milo’s (Seth Green) quest to save his mom (Joan Cusack) from Martians that involves stowing away on a spaceship, navigating an elaborate, multi-level planet and taking on the alien nation and their leader (Mindy Sterling).
May 20: “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” (Disney Digital 3D) finds Penelope Cruz subbing for Keira Knightley in this fourth outing for Johnny Depp.
June 24: “Cars 2” (Disney Digital 3D and IMAX 3D) finds the auto buddies traveling overseas for a race and an unexpected mission of espionage.
August 19: “Fright Night” (3D, DreamWorks) finds a high school senior who thinks he’s on top of the world (Anton Yelchin) until a vampire (Colin Farrell) moves in next door.
October 7: “Real Steel” (IMAX, DreamWorks) is a gritty robot boxing drama set in the future starring Hugh Jackman and directed by Shawn Levy (“A Night at the Museum” franchise, “Date Night”).
