First-day sales of “Avatar” on Blu-ray set all-time sales records with about 1.5 million copies in North America, according to various reports sourcing Fox Home Entertainment officials.
Those figures would surpass previous “Blu-ray” Day One record-holder “The Dark Knight,” which sold about 600,000 copies in the U.S. and the U.K. when the Blu-ray format was just taking hold and was much smaller than it is today.
Retailers reportedly sold an average of 60% of their Blu-ray copies Thursday, which include nothing but the movie in 2D.
Producer Jon Landau reiterated Thursday morning (April 22) during a Q&A at 3D Gaming Summit in Universal City, Ca., that a special edition with bonus features would be released in November. There is no word yet on a 3D release of the movie on Blu-ray.
