The movie that won the 3DHollywoodInHiDef award for Best 3D Movie Experience of 2009, the IMAX film “Under the Sea,” is out on Blu-ray this week (Warner, $35.99).

While it’s not in 3D yet and it certainly is not as impactful on your TV as on the 70-foot-tall IMAX screen, it is still one of the best ocean documentaries ever made, and a nice companion to the upcoming Disneynature film in traditional 2D theaters April 22, “Oceans,” which also has some great visual moments.
The Blu-ray of “Under the Sea” has something IMAX did not, five featurettes that explore even deeper the production at the Great Barrier Reef, Indonesia, South Australia, and Milne Bay and New Britain in Indonesia. A mini-documentary on the challenges and breathtaking rewards of shooting with a giant IMAX camera is enormously fascinating.
