Blu-ray player sales were up a whopping 44% during the holidays, thanks in large part to a 34% decline in average selling price to $151.
The news comes on the heels of last week’s DEG year-end report that Blu-ray player penetration skyrocketed 76% to 17.3 million households.
While that’s good for consumers and the growth of the installed base of Blu-ray players, it wasn’t so great for the people who make a business of Blu-rays, as dollar percentages dropped 5%, according to The NPD Group’s Weekly Tracking Service.
Similarly, flat panel TVs were up 16% in unit sales and down 12% in dollars on price declines of 25% to $525.
For the five week holiday period, overall U.S. consumer technology retail salesĀ rang in at $10.8 billion dollars, up significantly from the 6% decline during the 2008 holiday season.
