“Avatar” continues to register otherworldly boxoffice totals with more than $16 mil. per day on Monday and Tuesday since its stellar $77 million opening weekend.
Through Tuesday “Avatar” has grossed nearly $110 million on about 7,000 screens in 3,452 theaters in North America alone, according to Boxofficemojo.com.
The James Cameron epic set the record for an IMAX opening weekend with $9.5 million at 178 sites (surpassing the $8.5 mil. for “Star Trek” at 138 sites) and shattered the previous record for an opening of a 3D movie with $55 million, far surpassing the $35.4 million for “Up” last summer
Final tallies for all domestic and international grosses rose from initial estimates on Sunday, with the foreign haul rising to $164.5 million — 56% of which came from 3D showings representing only 26% of the 14,505 screens — for a worldwide all-time opening weekend record gross for a non-sequel of $241.6 million.
