John Lowry is the embodiment of Hollywood In HiDef. He is a HiDef guru and one of the most respected professionals in Hollywood when it comes to film restoration.
His company, Lowry Digital, is responsible for the impeccable HiDef restorations of franchises like Indiana Jones and Star Wars for DVD, and more recently “Snow White’ for Blu-ray, and did a significant amount of work on the theatrical presentation of James Cameron’s “Avatar.”
A couple years ago the former Canadian TV executive who has adopted Southern California as his new home, created a new company called TrioScopics to create low-cost, high-quality transfers of theatrical 3D movies for display on everything from DVDs to iPhones.
His new company did the 3D transfers for the Blu-ray releases of “Journey to the Center of the Earth” for Warner Bros. and “My Bloody Valentine” for Lionsgate, and even for two black-and-white short subjects in 3D on the recent Sony DVD “The Three Stooges Collection Volume Seven – 1952-1954,” among others. Most recently he created the 3D version of the bonus feature original short “Bob’s Big Break” on the DreamWorks Blu-ray release of “Monsters vs. Aliens” (the movie itself was not converted to 3D even though it played that way in theaters).
But many studio executives are hesitant to commit to using his process that maximizes the 150-year-old anaglyph 3D system using a filtered color process and requiring the familiar glasses with colored lenses (green and magenta, in this case).
John recently sat down with us here at 3DHollywood.net to discuss his company, successes and challenges, as you’ll see and hear in the video below:
Good sales pitch. I do not have issue with Anaglyph per se as the “current” distribution medium for 3D on DVD / Bluray , at least until everyone changes to 3D enabled TV sets as mentioned in the interview..
What I do take exception to is this “patented” approach that seeks to underplay the free non royalty anaglyph process of red-cyan.
In the end Anaglyph is anaglyph. It just needs to be done right. Every one has a right to know how to: http://realvision.ae/blog/2009/09/red-cyan-color-code-trioscopics-angalyph-is-anaglyph/
